TL;DR

In Windows, open Settings โ†’ System โ†’ Display โ†’ Advanced display, choose the correct screen, and inspect its refresh rate.

A monitor can have a high refresh rate printed on its box while your computer is sending it a lower-rate signal. Before deciding the upgrade made little difference, check the active display setting.

In Windows, open Settings โ†’ System โ†’ Display โ†’ Advanced display, choose the correct screen, and inspect its refresh rate. The monitor's advertised maximum is a capability, not confirmation of the mode currently in use.

Check the screen you actually play on

Microsoft's display guidance explains where to change refresh rate and notes that available options depend on the display. Some choices can also require a resolution change.

On a multi-monitor desk, it is easy to inspect the wrong screen. Identify the gaming display first. Then note the active resolution and refresh rate together instead of reading only the largest number in a dropdown.

For scale, a 60 Hz refresh interval is about 16.67 milliseconds; 144 Hz is about 6.94 milliseconds; 240 Hz is about 4.17 milliseconds. These are calculated as 1,000 divided by Hz. They describe refresh intervals, not complete input latency, pixel response time or a promise that a game produces that many fresh frames.

When the expected option is missing

Do not start by forcing an undocumented custom mode. Work through the signal path using your monitor and computer documentation.

  • Check which input on the monitor is connected.
  • Check whether a dock, adapter or switch sits between the computer and display.
  • Look up the supported resolution-and-refresh combination for that connection.
  • Check the monitor's own settings for any model-specific mode requirement.
  • Revisit Windows after a cable or connection change.

The relevant question is whether the complete connection supports the desired mode. A connector's shape alone does not answer it, and a cable advertised with a large number does not establish every device's capabilities.

Three rates that should not share one label

Your monitor refresh setting, the game's rendered frame rate and a variable-refresh range answer different questions. A display configured for a high maximum does not force a demanding game to render at that speed.

There is also Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate. Microsoft describes DRR as changing refresh rate according to activity on supported systems and notes that it may limit some games' maximum rate. If that matches your symptom, compare with DRR disabled. Do not assume DRR and a game's variable-refresh behavior are the same setting.

A short verification you can keep

Make a small setup record after changing the mode:

CheckYour entry
Gaming display modelWrite the exact model
Active resolution and refresh rateCopy the values you observed
Connection pathInclude any dock or adapter
Game and display modeRecord the actual title and mode
Result after restarting the gameConfirm the configuration still behaves as expected

Use a familiar scene to check comfort and motion. You do not need to buy anything to establish whether the current setup is configured correctly.

If the setting was already right, that is still a useful result. It removes one uncertainty and gives you a reason to examine the game's performance instead of repeatedly changing display options.

A high-refresh monitor earns its place through the experience it delivers in your setup. Verifying the active mode is the first, simplest part of that assessment.
