TL;DR

A hardware pairing alone cannot describe every game, scene and setting you will run. Treat a bottleneck estimate as a question to investigate, not a diagnosis or a percentage of performance you can automatically recover.

A calculator gives your PC a bottleneck percentage. The number looks precise enough to turn into a shopping list: replace this processor, buy that graphics card, solve the problem.

A hardware pairing alone cannot describe every game, scene and setting you will run. Treat a bottleneck estimate as a question to investigate, not a diagnosis or a percentage of performance you can automatically recover.

The missing part of the number is the workload

Intel's technical guide to CPU and GPU bottlenecks discusses how limiting work can change across scenes and how adjusting workload can help identify the constraint.

The practical implication is that โ€œthis PC is bottleneckedโ€ is incomplete. What is it running, at which settings, and what performance target is it failing to reach?

A crowded simulation-heavy scene and a graphically demanding quiet scene can ask different things of the same machine. That is why a universal percentage is a poor substitute for observing the game that matters to you.

Define the problem before the upgrade

Write one sentence that describes the actual failure. For example: โ€œDuring this repeatable practice sequence, performance falls below my chosen target.โ€ That is more useful than โ€œmy CPU is too weak.โ€

Record the game version, resolution, graphics preset, frame cap and test location. Use built-in or game-supported telemetry where available. Avoid adding several monitoring tools at once, because then your test environment has changed too.

If your performance already meets a frame cap comfortably, a component does not need to report maximum utilization. Spare capacity is not automatically evidence of a defective setup.

Make a change that answers a question

Try reducing rendering resolution while leaving the scene and other settings unchanged. If performance improves substantially, that is consistent with graphics workload being important in that scene. It does not prove that every slowdown has the same cause.

If performance barely changes, you have narrowed the investigation, not identified the CPU with certainty. A frame cap, synchronization setting, another workload or a different constraint may still matter.

ObservationUseful next question
Lower resolution substantially improves performanceWhich visual settings are worth trading for speed?
Lower resolution changes littleIs a cap active, or is another part of the workload limiting progress?
Only one scene performs poorlyWhat is different about that scene?
Results vary widely between repeated runsIs the test actually repeatable?

Repeat the original configuration after the change. That return check helps reveal whether the scene, background activity or test method moved underneath you.

Turn evidence into a spending decision

Before buying, look for benchmarks that match your intended game, settings and candidate hardware as closely as possible. Results from a different workload can provide context, but they cannot promise your exact outcome.

Also set a meaningful target. An upgrade that improves an average you already find comfortable may be less valuable to you than fixing a recurring disruption. A number should connect to an experience you care about.

The DCPROSENS FPS calculator belongs in the estimate category too. Use it to organize an initial comparison, then validate the assumptions against your own observations and relevant measurements.

A good diagnosis should tell you what to test next. If a percentage immediately tells you what to buy without explaining the workload, it has skipped the most useful part.
