Mouse Stuttering at 4000 or 8000 Hz? Test This First

TL;DR

If mouse movement becomes choppy after enabling 4000 or 8000 Hz, compare it with a lower supported polling rate in the same scene. Keep DPI and sensitivity unchanged. Repeat the test before blaming the mouse: the problem may depend on the game, input processing, software or connection.

A higher number on the mouse settings screen does not tell you whether your current game handles that setting well. The practical goal is stable input under the workload you actually play.

This guide is for a specific symptom: movement became uneven after a polling-rate change, or hitches appear mainly during fast mouse sweeps. For general freezes, start with the high-FPS stuttering checklist.

What the polling-rate number means

Polling rate describes a nominal report frequency. The reciprocal gives the nominal interval between reports:

Selected rateNominal interval
125 Hz8 ms
500 Hz2 ms
1000 Hz1 ms
2000 Hz0.5 ms
4000 Hz0.25 ms
8000 Hz0.125 ms

These values are calculated as 1,000 / Hz. They are not measured click latency, a promise that every interval is identical or the time until a pixel changes.

A system receives input more frequently at a higher report rate. Whether that produces a useful improvement depends on the complete implementation. Microsoft documents how applications receive device movement through raw mouse input; that mechanism alone does not certify any game's high-rate performance.

Establish whether polling rate is involved

Do not begin by changing five settings. Use this comparison:

  1. Save the current DPI, in-game sensitivity, polling rate and connection mode.
  2. Select a lower supported rate, such as 1000 Hz if available on your mouse.
  3. Open a repeatable practice scene and make the same broad sweeps and small corrections.
  4. Repeat at the higher rate without changing graphics settings or sensitivity.
  5. Return to the lower rate and repeat again.

Use the same capture tool for every run if you can record frame times. Otherwise, keep a simple observation log and describe the result as subjective. Do not turn a visual impression into a precise latency claim.

Interpret the result before changing anything else

ResultReasonable next action
Only the higher rate repeatedly hitchesKeep the stable rate while investigating game and device compatibility
Both rates hitch in the same placesBroaden the investigation to frame delivery and the scene workload
The issue appears in one game onlyCheck that game's support guidance and current input options
The issue appears across applicationsCheck the device profile, connection and manufacturer troubleshooting
The difference disappears on repeatRecord the comparison as inconclusive

This test narrows the search. It does not prove the CPU is too weak, the sensor is defective or every high-rate mouse behaves the same way.

Check the surrounding configuration

Use the manufacturer's supported software to confirm that the intended rate was applied. Some products require a particular receiver, connection or firmware for their advertised maximum. Consult the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list of “8K settings.”

For wireless devices, inspect receiver placement and connection using the manufacturer's guidance. Change only one connection variable at a time. A different port is a comparison, not evidence that every rear port is faster than every front port.

Record whether an overlay, capture utility or device application is running. If you test with one disabled, document that change separately. Do not disable security software to make a mouse benchmark look better.

Save the configuration you can reproduce

A useful log entry is: “Same scene, same DPI and sensitivity; high-rate sweeps hitched on two repeated comparisons; lower-rate sweeps did not.” That is more informative than “8000 Hz is broken.”

Keep the stable setting for normal play. Revisit the higher rate after a relevant game or device update if you want to test again. There is no need to repeat an unresolved experiment before every match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 8000 Hz always better than 1000 Hz?

It provides a shorter nominal reporting interval. Whether it improves your experience depends on support, stability and the rest of the system.

Should I change sensitivity when changing polling rate?

Not for this comparison. Polling frequency and movement scaling are different settings. Holding sensitivity constant makes the result easier to interpret.

Can a browser polling test prove my in-game performance?

No. It can observe events delivered to that browser environment. It does not reproduce every game's input handling or measure the complete click-to-display path.
